New York City: Recently, in times of plenty, but still seeking revenues New York City went after the 750 Community Gardens existing in poor neighborhoods. Why, with over 11,000 vacant lots, choose to demolish those lots which are Community Gardens? Why set out to evict asthmatic children and elderly residents, bulldozing 20 to 30 year-old gardens before the eyes of grieving gardeners who had given chunks of their lives making green magic out of garbage-strewn lots? But let's hear it for Bette Midler and the New York Restoration Project which she started in 1995. She saved 150 of the gardens. May they all be saved.
